The Capability Gap Communication Principle
Every professional has gaps between their current capability and what their role or aspirations demand. The capability gap communication principle holds that professionals should communicate these gaps appropriately—not concealing them out of fear nor broadcasting them indiscriminately, but acknowledging them in contexts where acknowledgment enables support, development, or realistic expectations.
Concealing capability gaps prevents the support and development that could close them. The professional who hides what they cannot yet do foregoes opportunities to learn from those who could help. Broadcasting gaps indiscriminately undermines confidence in the professional's current capability. Neither extreme serves professional effectiveness.
